IberoDocs returns to Edinburgh’s deeply missed Filmhouse for its 11th edition, celebrating the vibrant cultures of Latin America, Spain and Portugal through powerful documentaries. The programme includes five feature films (four of which are Scottish premieres) and five shorts connected by the themes of searching and the sea. Nearly all directors will attend for in-person Q&As.
Home is Somewhere Else lays bare the harsh realities of deportation in the United States through young immigrant voices. Relentless Memory follows a Mapuche researcher retracing her ancestors’ forced displacement. To Our Friends captures a young woman coming of age and navigating clashing worlds. In Neirud, the director unearths the remarkable story of her aunt: a black lesbian wrestler in 1960s Brazil. Each film is a powerful exploration of resilience and personal growth.
A highlight is the screening of The Boy and the Suit of Lights by Edinburgh-based filmmaker Inma de Reyes, accompanied by a live soundtrack performance.
New environmental strand The Sea features four shorts exploring our relationship with the ocean, including Blow! by acclaimed director Neus Ballús who will join us in Edinburgh for the first time.
IberoDocs continues throughout September across other cities and venues.
