Julia Ducournau

Julia Ducournau is a widely celebrated auteur and feminist filmmaker. Her previous films Raw (2016) and Titane (2021) explore themes of identity, transformation and body choice, often taking a transgressive approach to the story with realistic and disturbing body horror designed not to satisfy an audience's bloodlust but rather to discomfort them. She has a recognisable style, with a utilisation of striking colours and constant camera movement generating an uneasy atmosphere for the viewer, adding to the uncomfortable feeling which she creates within her stories.

Her newest film Alpha (2025) follows a family who live in a world in which there is a bloodborne virus that turns its victims into marble. When the 13-year-old daughter comes home with a tattoo, her mother fears that she may have the virus. This continues to explore the transformation of the human body whilst also looking at the fear and paranoia experienced during COVID. No doubt her next film will be disturbing, horrifying and beautiful all at once!
