Screening as part of Catalan Film Festival 2026.
This screening will have a short introduction and welcome to the festival.
Content note: Contains graphic violence against animals and death of animals in a real-life bullfighting context.
Albert Serra’s unflinching documentary takes us up close with the spectacle of bullfighting, as well as with the shocking violence involved and the bravado and machismo of its superstars. We follow bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey both in and outside of the ring, creating an almost hypnotic rhythm as the camera moves between a cycle of bullfights, minibuses, and hotel rooms. Without intervention from the director, the film leaves us to form our own opinions about what is depicted on screen as we reflect on the horror and paradoxical beauty of this ancient spectacle.
The film won the 2024 Golden Shell at San Sebastian International Film Festival and was recently voted the best film of 2025 by Cahiers du Cinéma.DocumentaryPT2H5MN/C 182026-03-20Andrés Roca Rey
