His works were dismissed at the time (as well as many other melodrama films) as being "sentimental women's pictures", but from the late 1960s onwards gained massive critical acclaim from filmmaking colleagues and critics such as Jean-Luc Godard and Roger Ebert. In particular, All That Heaven Allows inspired a glut of films, such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats The Soul, John Waters' Polyester, and Todd Haynes' Far From Heaven, a homage to Sirk's work that we're screening alongside this masterpiece. Rich, upper-class widow Cary Scott falls for her gardener, a much younger and more grounded man. Disapproval and criticism from her children and country club friends ensues, as their relationship causes two divided social classes to collide. Dr Malgorzata Bugaj is a Film and Media Studies Teaching Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Open Learning where she teaches short open-access courses, such as Cinema and the Five Senses or Women Directors in Focus. She is a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities exploring the intersection of film and medical humanities. She also works as a freelance curator, organising film events in Edinburgh and beyond.DramaPT1H29MU2025-12-14
