If you haven’t seen Best in Show before, you are in for a (dog) treat. This is a satirical tour de force that focuses on a Crufts-style dog show where the competition is fierce, and the canines are... well-trained.
The same can't be said for the oddball human entrants travelling to the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show, made up of a stellar ensemble cast of comedy greats, including the film's writers - king of ‘mockumentary’, Christopher Guest (This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman) and Eugene Levy (Schitt's Creek). Captured by a ‘documentary film crew’, and with the dialogue almost entirely improvised on the spot, Best in Show is a platform for the comedic prowess and timing of the cast, none more so than the late, great Catherine O’Hara.
An original member of the Second City Television cast along with John Candy and Martin Short, O’Hara had quickly become one of the ultimate movie moms in the late 80s and 90s in her roles in Beetlejuice and Home Alone. Here, O’Hara and long-time collaborator Levy created comedy gold as dog parents to a Norwich terrier Winky, in their legendary roles as Gerry and Cookie Fleck. The pair, along with a host of other eccentric dog owners (including Jennifer Coolidge and Parker Posey), unleash a hilarious montage of novelty songs ("God Loves A Terrier"), memorable catch phrases ("He went after her like she's made outta ham!”) and great innovations in the field of mockumentary. A paw-sitively laugh-a-minute experience!
