It's little wonder that Richard Linklater's love letter to the French New Wave, <i>Nouvelle Vague</i>, chronicles the making of <i>Breathless</i>. Arguably the most defining film of the movement, <i>Breathless</i> is the story (devised by fellow French New Wave director and Cahiers du Cinéma critic François Truffaut) of a small time thief (Belmondo) who steals a car, kills a cop, and tries to convince a newspaper saleswoman (Seberg) to go on the lam to Italy with him. Pauline Kael considered <i>Breathless</i> to be the most important New Wave film to reach America, and the film did indeed put both the movement and Jean-Paul Belmondo on the map, with Kael calling him themost exciting actor since Marlon Brando. <i>Breathless</i> completely rewrote the rules of cinema while also paying homage to what came before - as with many Godard films, it's a veritable smorgasbord of cameos and references to many different films, both French New Wave and not!
