Bridging the Gap - Outsiders

This screening will be followed by a Q&A/post-film discussion with filmmakers Riad Arfin, Meray Diner and Sarah Grant, moderated by Alexandra Colta. A collection of short documentaries showcasing those fearless outsiders whose journeys across borders, conflict and time offer inspiring and thought-provoking stories of acceptance, reconciliation and love. Audiences are encouraged to stay for a post-screening discussion. THE SOUND OF THE WIND (Maria Pankova) Yuliia has become a refugee in Scotland due to the war in Ukraine. She is fighting for the future of her children while trying to maintain her relationship with her husband, who is on the frontline. FRIENDS ON THE OUTSIDE (Annabel Moodie) FRIENDS ON THE OUTSIDE tells the story of an incarcerated man called Jamie who finds joy and comfort inside by foraging for weeds and caring for birds. It questions why the UK prison system is currently in its biggest expansion in more than a century, exposing naturalising language around this expansion. BIG MOVES (Sarah Grant) A personal short documentary about dancing as a plus size woman through the lens of pop culture. A radical and joyful reimagining of awesome dance scenes with the bodies that traditionally get pushed to the back taking up space front and centre. A BORDER BETWEEN US (Riad Arfin) A BORDER BETWEEN US is a short creative documentary about the struggle and difficulties to find a place to make home for a couple from two different countries. One of them will always have to sacrifice to be together and what cost does it take to make it work? FITTING (Caitlin McMullan) FITTING explores the relationship between the director, an amputee, and her prosthetist during the making of a prosthetic leg. It demystifies an unfamiliar space and asks what it means to create an extension to someone else’s body, questioning prejudice widely seen within our society's consideration of body image. PINK MOON (Meray Diner) During the Pink Moon season, a daughter revisits her childhood home to work through the garden with her father as it blossoms in the politically and physically divided island of Cyprus. It once facilitated her nightmares of the conflict and now their conversations. The filmmaker digs into the inter-generational trauma and how the conflict, opposite views to her father, and restrictions in north Cyprus affected her migration. This screening is part of Doc Screen, an initiative run by Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) in partnership with Filmhouse. Supported by Film Hub Scotland, part of the BFI’s Film Audience Network, awarding funding on behalf of Screen Scotland and the BFI National Lottery.PT1H20M152025-07-01
