BULK + Q&A

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Ben Wheatley. Ben Wheatley (A Field in England, High-Rise, Free Fire) joins us for a Q&A screening of his mind-melding sci-fi thriller BULK. The film received its world premiere as the opening film of the Midnight Madness strand of the 2025 Edinburgh International Film Festival, and stars Noah Taylor (Submarine, Paddington 2) alongside frequent Wheatley collaborators Sam Riley (also of Islands), Alexandra Maria Lara, and Mark Monero. BULK is the story of a scientist, rather over-enthusiastic in nature, whose experiments with string theory go too far, leading to the explosion of his "brane" and a rescue mission being undertaken. It's a film that needs to be seen to be believed - shot in a very DIY manner on camcorders, iPhones, and GoPros with models and credits fashioned by Wheatley itself, the film pushes the limits and understanding of what can be done in independent cinema. The movie reflects its director’s obsession with the magic of visual effects from early cinema pioneer Georges Méliès to the stop-motion creatures created by Ray Harryhausen. “I’ve been interested for a long time in the history of effects, 2D effects, in camera, back projection, model works, the Schüfftan process and all these things,” says Wheatley. “It’s a love letter to film and creativity but also to technology and allusion – a way to make the budgetary constraints make narrative sense for the film. I'm also working with cast members ive worked with before – so it’s a collaboration and a built in understanding of how we will make the film and the workload that everyone signs up to. It's very well planned." "The same goes for the crew – we had a very small unit of close collaborators- so there’s a shorthand there. We also teamed up with the MetFilm School in Brighton and bought in students to help across the camera and art departments."ActionPT1H35M152026-01-18
