Originally planned to be a prequel to <i>A Better Tomorrow</i> before a falling out with his producer, John Woo's <i>Bullet in the Head</i> was reworked from its initial form to include the Hong Kong director's reaction to the Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing the year prior to release. The first cut of the film ran over three hours long - Woo himself has described it as his <i>Apocalypse Now</i>, in that it completely drained the director physically and mentally in a similar way to Francis Ford Coppola while making his classic 1979 film. In fact, some scenes proved so chaotic to film that Woo ran into several shots, even running into an explosion that left cuts on his head!
<i>Bullet in the Head</i> follows Ben, Frank and Paul (Tony Leung Chiu-wai of <i>Chungking Express</i> and <i>In The Mood For Love</i> fame, Jacky Cheung Hok-Yau, Waise Lee Chi-Hung), childhood friends and gang members. After accidentally killing a rival gang leader, the trio flee the slums of Hong Kong.
