Following his girlfriend leaving him, radio host and local celebrity Alan 'Dickie' Bird's life is sent into upheaval. Witnessing an ice cream van targeted and destroyed by irate competitors, Bird is drawn into a fierce struggle between a pair of Italian families over Glasgow's ice cream market.
Local Hero and Gregory's Girl director Bill Forsyth was inspired to make Comfort and Joy in equal parts by the new phenomenon of local radio DJs, and Peter Capaldi telling him the story of Glasgow's Ice Cream Wars. Of course, these wars weren't necessarily only about ice cream, but Capaldi told the tale as if it was, being from an ice cream family himself, leading to the genesis of this delightful Scottish Christmas slice of life.ComedyPT1H46MPG2025-12-30
