After World War II, under the Nationalist government, the sculpture fell victim to rising hostility toward Japanese culture. Abandoned at a train station, it was defaced when vandals splashed ink across the nude figure’s groin. A local surgeon, recognizing its cultural significance, rescued and sheltered it throughout decades of martial law. Its eventual return to public view reflects Taiwan’s renewed recognition of its artistic heritage after 38 years of dictatorship.</div>DocumentaryPT2H22MN/C 182026-07-12
