Defence of the Realm (35mm)

This screening will be hosted by Mark Cosgrove, director of Watershed Bristol’s Cinema Rediscovered festival and curator of the Against the Grain: 1980s British Cinema programme from this year’s edition, and will be introduced by producer Lynda Myles who will join Mark for a discussion and Q&A after the screening. Produced by Scottish film legend and friend of Filmhouse Lynda Myles, Defence of the Realm is a highly charged tale of murder, intrigue and political corruption. Nick (Gabriel Byrne) and Vernon (Denholm Elliott) are two reporters. They receive an anonymous tip-off that a political scandal is about to break. MP Dennis Markham (Ian Bannen), a friend of Vernon’s, has been photographed leaving a call girl’s flat, and two hours later an East German military attaché is photographed going in. Whilst Nick delves into Markham’s affairs, Vernon is interested in a different angle. Nick begins to realise the story goes far deeper than anyone imagined, leading him to realise that someone does not want the truth to be discovered, someone with much power and influence...ActionPT1H36MPG2025-09-09
