Directed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao (<i>Nomadland</i>) who co-wrote the film with Maggie O'Farrell, author of the novel it is adapted from, the film features two transcendent performances from Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal as Agnes (better known as Anne) Hathaway and William Shakespeare. Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn star in supporting roles as William's mother and Agnes' brother, along with 12-year-old Jacobi Jupe as the couple's titular son, and his brother Noah as the Bard's Hamlet.<div><i><br></i></div><div><i>Hamnet</i>, produced by a selection of Hollywood heavyweights including Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes, scooped up several awards on the festival circuit this year including the Audience Award for Best Feature at the BFI London Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at Toronto International Film Festival. The film picked up 8 Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Jessie Buckley (which she won!), Best Director and Best Picture.</div><div><br></div><div><div>--</div><div><br></div><div>I found this a moving exploration of grief, and how people express it differently. The scenes at the Globe Theatre showing a group response and reaching out particularly resonated for me. I ushered a baby and carer screening, and any scenes with a baby crying created a lovely call and response for the babies in the audience.</div><div><br></div><div><i>Written by Katy McTernan, Cinema Duty Manager</i></div></div>DramaPT2H6M12A2026-01-09
