Journey to Italy stars Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders as childless married couple Katherine and Alex Joyce, driving to Italy from their native Britain. They plan to head to just outside Naples, where they have just inherited a villa from Alex's uncle that they intend to sell. On this drive, the couple are both hit with the revelation that this journey is the first time they have actually been alone together, and despite their lengthy marriage they don't particularly know each other properly.
Now, Roberto Rossellini is obviously not a French New Wave director, and Journey to Italy was a box office bomb at the time of release. However, the film was extremely popular with critics at the Cahiers du Cinéma magazine, who numbered Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol among others, whose eventual directorial careers were strongly influenced by this poetic, morbid entry into the canon and in turn influenced the rest of the French New Wave movement they created.DramaPT1H25MPG2026-02-05
