Crowned as the highest-grossing live-action film of all time in Japan, Kokuho is about ambition, loyalty, and the making of a Kabuki legend. Set in Nagasaki, 1964, the film follows Kikuo, who after the death of his yakuza gang leader father, becomes the protégé of a famous Kabuki actor. Alongside the actor's only son Shunsuke, Kikuo dedicates himself to this traditional form of theatre. The two young men grow and evolve together as decades pass, from acting school to the grandest stages. Amid scandals and glory, brotherhood and betrayals, one of them will become the art of Kabuki's greatest Japanese master.
Alongside its success in the domestic box office, Kokuho has received widespread critical acclaim. The film became the first title produced in Japan to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2026 ceremony, also being Japan's entry for Best International Feature for which it made the December shortlist. At home, it won 11 out of 13 awards at the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize, only losing out in the Supporting Actor and Actress categories - both of which saw 3 out of 5 nominations go to Kokuho roles!DramaPT2H54M152026-05-08
