La Bola Negra

This film contains flashing lights which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

La Bola Negra tells the story of three men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain and inheritance, across three different eras in Spanish history – 1932, 1937 and 2017. Rich with the poetry of Federico García Lorca's poetry and suffused with desire, grief and hope, it is an intimate love story and a sweeping exploration of memory, inheritance and queer history, honouring those whose lives and loves were too often forced into silence.

Inspired by the real life romance under Francoist repression between Lorca and Rafael Rodríguez Rapún that features in the film, Spain's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards deftly weaves together these three narratives that combine fiction, reality, and an imagined completion of Lorca's unfinished play of the same name. Writer-director duo Los Javis - whose 13 (!) year relationship ended during filming - took home the prize for Best Director(s) from the film's 2026 Cannes Film Festival premiere, before co-writer Alberto Conejero - whose play La piedra oscura the film adapts - joined us at Filmhouse for its Scottish premiere as part of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival. Our Marketing Officer David was there, and after they managed to stop crying, they declared it the best film released this year so far - but don't just take their word for it!
DramaPT2H35M152026-11-06ESesGuitarricadelafuente
