On Sound (Short Film Programme) (Falastin Frames)

This screening will be followed by a post-screening discussion moderated by Toufic Haddad. Four experimental shorts uncovering the occupation’s haunting use of sound as a form of torture, the politics of sound and sonic self-determination. Untitled (To The Lebanese Citizens) (2006, 3 min, Ali Cherri) While warships were evacuating foreigners and dual-nationality Lebanese citizens trying to escape the country during the July War in 2006, the zionist state intercepted radio station Voice of the People's signal to broadcast an audio message to the Lebanese population. Vibration from Gaza (2023, 16 min, Rehab Nazzal) Vibration from Gaza uncovers the life of Deaf children in the occupied and confined coastal territory of Gaza, Palestine. The film questions whether the hearing impairment of these children is a consequence of Israel’s use of sonic weaponry, such as sonic booms, and raises questions about the deafness of the world towards the conditions under which 2.2 million Palestinians have been living since 2007. Offing (2021, 29 min, Oraib Toukan) Offing was produced in the aftermath of the 2021 Israeli war on Palestinians residing in the Israeli-besieged Gaza strip. It engages stories told by Gaza artist Salman Nawati, against footage shot by Toukan that explores the tender and the mundane as acts of life. But also, on the inadequacy of representing suffering. Ultimately – what narratives escape the frame of war? The Diary of a Sky (2024, 45 min, Lawrence Abu Hamdan) The Diary of a Sky uncovers a haunting sonic melting pot of constant Israeli military flights and the hum of generators during blackouts, which plays out as an atmospheric symphony of violence over Beirut. This film drops viewers into a chilling record of everyday life indelibly changed by the air's weaponization, where the horror of repeated incursions becomes a disconcertingly regular backdrop.PT1H32MN/C PG2025-12-04
