The true origin of the WGACAWNATUI strand came when I announced in a Programming meeting, “I need to have some outlet in which I invite The People of Edinburgh to watch a film I’ve seen recently and think now, that they need to watch it too”. I watched Francis Ford Coppola’s One From The Heart recently and I was going as far as to pitch a whole 'not-quite-musical musical week' (is that a genre? Sort of?) but then thankfully, WGAC was born and in a way, there is actually no more fitting context to play this film than one where the programming is linked to a total unabashedness* by its programmer.
Entirely shot on elaborate soundstages with a soundtrack by Tom Waits and Crystal Gale, One From The Heart starts with us meeting a long-term couple (played by Frederic Forrest and Teri Garr) getting ready to spend their anniversary together, only to find themselves snapping at each other, bubbling tensions result in them walking out on each other. They practically fling themselves out of the door and find themselves quickly catching the eyes and being in the arms of others (the incredibly striking Nastassja Kinski, and a charismatic (fairly) early performance from Raúl Juliá). You’ll find yourself completely devouring the set pieces, the rambunctiously choreographed dance sequence on which Gene Kelly served as an advisor and gasping at the cinematography, which has clearly left an impression on filmmakers since - you’ll recognise fingerprints of One From The Heart all over musicals, romance dramas and epics since.
I am also going to shoehorn another upcoming mini-season that I am still planning, which is that to celebrate Harry Dean Stanton’s upcoming centenary. Trust me that apart from planning the actual films around his centenary, any time he turns up in another film we’ve included as part of our programme, it has been a sheer coincidence. Thus far in 2026 we’ve played Christine, Wild at Heart and now The Straight Story and One From the Heart. The man turns up everywhere! We’ve gone ahead and got our screening of Paris, Texas on sale and other films will be on sale soon - Perfect Pairs across… dare I say it… any films Harry Dean Stanton is in for 2026?
