Jacques Rivette's feature debut is a dark mystery following Anne, a young student who joins a group plagued by eerie tensions, anxieties and the deaths of two of its members. One of the early works of the French New Wave, Paris Belongs to Us ticks at least two of the movement's boxes, with the director being a critic for Cahiers du cinéma at the time and the film featuring many director cameos, including Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Demy and Rivette himself. In its initial London run, critics met the film with much anger and bemusement - however, the British Film Institute awarded it the Sutherland Trophy for the most innovative and original film brought to the city by the National Film Theatre that year.MysteryPT2H21M12A2026-02-02
