This undisputed masterpiece of science fiction cinema – and the best in the series of remakes and sequels by a country mile - sees Chuck Heston and his fellow space travellers crash land on an unknown planet where, they soon discover, apes have dominion over humans...
The witty script (courtesy Rod “Twilight Zone” Serling and Michael Wilson) weaves biting social satire, nuclear anxiety and flawed humanity into a fine adventure film complete with one of the great endings of Hollywood cinema, whilst Jerry Goldsmith’s supremely effective, groundbreaking, avant-garde score perfectly evokes this other-world.
Rare for Hollywood, Heston’s ‘Taylor’ is really not your typical hero – a fairly unpleasant misanthrope who clearly left Earth to get away from the humanity he so clearly disdains – but the choice works very well.
If you’re really lucky, you’ve never seen the film before now, though I suspect that’s unlikely. If you’ve only ever seen it on your TV then come and wallow in the ‘Cinemascope’ imagery of this glorious 2024, 4K restoration, screening here now for no other reason than we thought you might like to see it!
