This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Alvin Tsang (online), chaired by Dr Qiao Li (Joe) (Edinburgh Napier University) and Prof Sabrina Qiong Yu (Newcastle University).
In this auto-biographical film, Alvin Tsang tries to understand why his mother divorced his father after she moved to L.A. (USA) in the early 1980s. Fraught with betrayal from his parents’ divorce, economic strife and communication meltdown between parents and children, Alvin Tsang explores memories of family past and life in America while probing his role as a filmmaker, gathering and presenting years of family footage. A deeply personal award-winning film that gives an insider view of the contemporary migrant experience, divorce, family psychology, and personal filmmaking. It was praised by The Boston Globe for “exploring the past with a Proustian sensitivity”; by Meredith Monk for its “clear-eyed honesty”; and by Salon for “coming closest to feeling like a truly distinct Asian American film.”
Alvin Tsang is a documentary filmmaker and artist based in New York City. His work explores personal experience to inform on bigger issues of community, migration and change.
