Sid and Nancy was unleashed upon the world 40 years ago today at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, so to celebrate it’s birthday we’re showing it here at Filmhouse!
The first conception of the idea that became Sid and Nancy took place when director Alex Cox heard that a studio wanted to make a Madonna vehicle about the pair, which he described it as a “troubling idea”, so he went off to work on his own script. Portraying the relationship between Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen as they battled alcoholism and drug abuse, the film is a sincere look at what is often toxic whilst still having moments of humanity sprinkled throughout, transforming what could be a gratuitous look at two addicts' lives into a touching and often humorous picture of the characters. Beautifully shot by Roger Deakins with shadows and grime taking up the frame, and funny dialogue to boot, it’s one of my personal favourite films from my favourite filmmaker. It also has a fantastic score by Joe Strummer, what’s not to love!
