The film had an extremely successful awards season, breaking the record for most nominations at the Academy Awards with 16(!) and taking home 4, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the first woman and woman of colour to win the award. Identical twins and World War I veterans Smoke and Stack (both played by Oscar-nominated Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta from their exploits in the north, hoping to start their lives anew by opening up a juke joint and enlisting their cousin Sammy (Miles Caton in his feature debut) to play the blues there.
