An unlikely friendship between a dour, working class butcher and a repressed schoolteacher coincides with a grisly series of Ripper-type murders in a provincial French town. Claude Chabrol directs his wife Stéphane Audran in this finest of collaborations between the married couple. In fact, it's a wonder this film is as good as it is - Chabrol, renowned for drunken antics on set, is remembered by Audran to have drank so much wine during the shooting of The Butcher one day that he had to be taken away from set on a cart! However, despite this, the film is considered to be one of the French New Wave director's greatest films, being listed on Roger Ebert's Great Movies list and included in Steven Schneider's 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.ThrillerPT1H33M152026-02-07
