Midway through their peculiar meditations, the unthinkable happens - an announcement of doom from the TV, and the end of the world is nigh. The man then makes a pact with the Almighty that he will sacrifice himself, and all that he is, if only the world is restored to its former condition.

Tarkovsky's final film before his untimely passing at 56-years-old, The Sacrifice earned the legendary director the honour of being a two time Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix winner - something only three more directors have done since, including Tarkovsky disciple Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Filmed in Sweden following Tarkovksy's expatriation from the Soviet Union, the film features many frequent collaborators of Ingmar Bergman both in front and behind the camera, including lead actor Erland Josephson (Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, Autumn Sonata) who returns after starring in the director's previous feature, Nostalgia.
DramaPT2H29M122026-07-31
