Claude Chabrol’s 1969 La Femme infidèle came out in the midst of France’s thirty glorious years, the prosperous post-war decades that showed life had never been so good - no matter if the French wanted it a lot better, with May 1968 given a passing mention in this film about upper middle-class characters oblivious to such things. Andrey Zvyagintsev remakes Chabrol’s film as Minotaur, setting it in Russia at the start of the war in Ukraine. If Chabrol showed how beastly the bourgeoisie could be, Zvyagintsev expands the critique, proposing little is left untouched by corruption in contemporary Russia. Drawing on the original film, the thriller genre more generally, and various Russian milieux, Minotaur is a morally fretful analysis of comfortable lives that evade the most uncomfortable consequences.
DramaPT1H30M152026-12-03ruTony McKibbin, Centre for Open Learning discussion: Minotaur"Tony McKibbin, Centre for Open Learning discussion: Minotaur"
