This screening will have a short 5-minute introduction and will be followed by a 45-minute post-film discussion with directors Alex Nevill, Mariana Duarte and Aria Danaparamita, moderated by Rachel Hamada.
2024 was the deadliest year on record for Channel crossings. This should have been a call for compassion. Instead, the government has responded with more anti-migrant policies, including the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill and the Migration White Paper, while echoing far-right racism in both rhetoric and policy. Through this film screening and conversation, we hold space for people to come together to reflect on how borders affect our communities and how we can cultivate more care, compassion, and justice for migrants and refugees.
Dover 82 (2025, 5min, Aria Danaparamita)
A poignant film honouring the 82 people who lost their lives crossing the Channel in 2024, the film archives the sites and textures of Dover’s border architecture, confronting how borders shape our relationship to place. First screened at the London Independent Film Festival 2025.
Notes from Brook House (2025, 28min, Alex Nevill)
Roaming landscapes filmed in 16mm reveal physical traces of different boundaries throughout the country. People encountered while filming lend their voice to stories from Brook House, an immigration detention centre outside London. First screened at the Open City Documentary Festival 2025.
Vittne (2024, 12min, Ahmad Al Shehabi)
An archival visual journey of Ahmad and his family’s harrowing escape from Syria. A decade later, they revisit those heart-wrenching snapshots, each frame echoing with emotions of their past. First screened at the Gothenburg Film Festival 2024.
Headland (2024, 13min, Mariana Duarte)
The changing face of a pebble beach on the coast of the English Channel serves as a backdrop to interweave the age-old tradition of sea rescue with the present-day plight of migrants crossing the sea. First screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2024.
