Vagabond

Screening because We've Got A Cinema And We're Not Afraid To Use It! Winner of the Venice Golden Lion and one of Agnes Varda’s most revered works, Vagabond is a character study of a doomed and enigmatic protagonist wilfully living life on the road, built solely on testimonies of strangers who had met her on her path. Part road movie, part investigative mystery, and part network narrative, balanced between fiction and documentary, Vagabond’s raison d'être is for Varda to challenge both the rules of film form and social norms in one fell swoop. Varda’s study of the margins of society brings up more questions than answers, and has one of the most astonishing opening and closing scenes of a film I’ve ever seen on the big screen. With a fierce, unforgettable performance by Sandrine Bonnaire, all in all it’s one of the best films of all time, and one of my all-time favourites, so I am very happy that we have a cinema to show it in! Selected and written by Jessie Moroney, Programme OfficerDramaPT1H46M152026-05-23
