Varieté

After holding his tongue for ten years in prison, convicted murderer "Boss" Huller tells the warden his story. Huller was a trapeze artist whose career ended after a fall from the high wire, after which he went on to run a sleazy big-top carnival with his wife and child. Tragedy strikes after the family take in a stranger as a sideshow dancer at Huller's insistence... Highly influential on a whole generation of filmmakers, the film was censored heavily upon its release in the United States, having its whole first reel removed from the runtime. With trapeze scenes shot in the Berlin Wintergarten, Varieté is famed for its innovative camerawork carried out by expressionist cinematographer Karl Fruend, including swinging shots from long-shot to close-up, and for the believed first documentation of unicycle hockey... A film from the holdings of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung (www.murnau-stiftung.de) in Wiesbaden.DramaPT1H44MPG2025-11-21
