Doc Screen is an initiative run by Scottish Documentary Institute in partnership with Filmhouse aiming to bring more independent documentaries into the cinema and to open up spaces for political and creative forms of expression, debate and solidarity.
With the support of Film Hub Scotland, we embark on this journey in Edinburgh, with the reopening of the much-loved Filmhouse, as part of our broader aim to champion and enhance the distribution of documentaries in Scotland. By working collaboratively with the filmmaking community and with Scotland-based exhibitors, we co-curate and facilitate a regular provision of local and international independent documentaries that rarely get screened otherwise.
Doc Screen is a part of a growing network of organisations with a mission to screen independent docs, sharing a belief that documentary can (and does) change the world. Documentary is urgent, inclusive, challenging and moving. Documentary is cinema and it is irresistible.

September programme, 24 Sep - 1 Oct / Un-settled / Un-rest
A programme showcasing new releases from Northern Ireland, exploring the power of community, collective trauma, memory and change.
October programme, 8-28 Oct / Keep looking
A programme that investigates what it means to be a witness or a protagonist in on-going war, conflict and violence. Through a lens pointed towards the sky, the moon, the computer screen or to the flowers, the films in this programme invite you, as an audience member, to keep looking and keep criticising, even when the media stops reporting. Rather than a spectacle of suffering, these films open up a broader perspective on past and current events, and a chance to follow a journey that imagines a new future that is feminist, queer, and free of all the unwanted -isms.
