Filmhouse missed out (being, as it was, closed) on screening these five relatively new digital versions of what are, arguably, the late, great Béla Tarr’s best known films. We take the opportunity to do so now, as our tribute to this most iconic of filmmakers – the master of ‘slow cinema’.
Renowned for his uncompromising, philosophical approach, Tarr’s films are defined by long takes, stark black-and-white cinematography and intense, metaphysical bleakness, used to create his uniquely atmospheric, unforgettable visions of the world.
A visitor to this cinema on a number of occasions at various EIFF’s – with Werckmeister Harmonies (2000), The Man From London (2007) and The Turin Horse (2011) – the Werckmeister screenings very nearly didn’t happen when, having insisted his 35mm print of the film travelled with him, he was unable to get it through UK customs!
